The Lego Desk

At The Soundmill Centre, we believe therapy begins the moment a child arrives — and our much-loved LEGO desk plays a big part in that. Built right into our reception desk, the LEGO display is designed especially for children to look at, notice, and talk about while they’re waiting. Children love spotting new characters, describing what’s happening in the scene, and sharing their own ideas and stories.

These moments naturally spark conversation and help our therapists tune into a child’s everyday speech, language, and social communication skills before a session even begins. Because the conversation is child-led and pressure-free, it gives us valuable insight into how skills are being used in real life — including confidence, vocabulary, sentence use, and whether therapy targets are starting to generalise beyond the therapy room.

Shaped by Family Feedback

Each term, we invite families to share feedback about their experience at The Soundmill Centre. Your feedback helps guide how we grow and improve our services. As a thank-you, families who complete our feedback survey go into the draw to help choose what gets added to the LEGO desk next. While children don’t build at the desk itself, they love seeing their ideas reflected in future updates — making the space feel familiar, fun, and truly theirs.

The LEGO desk is more than decoration. It’s a conversation starter, a calming focus point, and one of the many ways we help children feel comfortable, heard, and ready for therapy.
