Supporting Language Development in Children

Language is how children understand and use words, sentences, and meaning to share their thoughts, needs, and ideas. It includes receptive language (understanding what others say) and expressive language (using words and sentences to communicate).  Some children may find one aspect of language more challenging than the other, while others experience difficulties across both areas. These challenges can affect learning, social interaction, and confidence. Early, evidence-based support can make a meaningful difference in helping children develop strong communication skills and succeed at home, at school, and in everyday life.  If interested, you are welcome to email us to request our complimentary Language Enrichment and Parenting (LEAP) workbook, which outlines simple, evidence-based ways to support language growth at home.

My Health and Development  Blue Book – SA Health (0 - 5)

Every child born in South Australia receives a Blue Book to track their health and development milestones .

These resources are intended as a general guide to language development and do not replace an individual assessment or diagnosis. Every child’s language develops differently, and it’s okay to seek advice if you have questions or concerns.

If you’re unsure whether your child’s understanding or use of language is developing as expected a conversation with a speech pathologist can provide reassurance, guidance, and next steps if needed.
